5 Reason Why I Love Yoga & Its Benefits

At first it was so hard to get myself going after my collegiate career ended. I had to almost give myself some type of initiative to workout, so I bought a 30-day package for $30. I go in when I want, but my membership ends after 30 days. So what did I decide to do…well of course get my moneys worth and go everyday! But what I’ve come to find out is how much more in love with yoga I’ve become. Here’s why…

5 reasons why I love yoga and think it is has tons of benefits.

1. It’s challenging.

Being a former student-athlete I needed to find something that challenged my physical and mental abilities. Yoga is as challenging as you make it. Individually you have to push yourself to new levels. It may be hard the first few times, but that’s why it’s a practice.

2. It teaches discipline.

Doing some of the yoga poses forces you to keep in mind all working parts in the body while focusing on your breath. Finding strength in balance with your movements as well as life is something I learned through playing volleyball at the collegiate level. I truly believe yoga teaches the same types of self-awareness and discipline, just in a different way.

3. It’s a great workout!

I feel like I’m detoxing my body every time I go to a yoga session. Granted the heat is cranked up, regardless I’m still sweating my ass off, and I absolutely love it. Ever since starting and going everyday, I've noticed more muscle tone, and flexibility.

4. It’s a great stress reliever.

Removing stress from your life is always a plus, but learning how to manage that stress in yoga classes has really helped me outside of the studio. While doing yoga, the instructors constantly remind you to let something go as you further deepen into a pose. This practice is great for what you want to achieve during a session, but also for all aspects of life. Finding time to meditate everyday has dramatically helped with my stress, health, and sleep habits.

5. It's a lifestyle.

I absolutely love yoga. It’s more than a great way to workout it’s a great way of life. As Medindia.net puts it, “it is a way of living whose aim is ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’.” I couldn’t agree more. I leave every yoga session feeling rejuvenated and in harmony, as I learn more about myself and my body.

So if you’re contemplating whether you should give yoga a try, I would highly recommend it. What have you got to lose!
